Gimme a break...

My husband celebrated his birthday yesterday.
So I threw him a surprise party.
That's the seventh surprise party I've thrown for him since we met 11 years ago.
We recently told the church where he's the Associate Pastor
that we're going to be moving in a couple of weeks.
(Greg got a call to serve as the Pastor at a church in Tennessee.
So I guess we'll be VOLUNTEERS! ha!)
So it was extra special to have a bunch of our friends over to hang out.

I made a bunch of desserts and we just spent time hanging out,
the 13 kids had a great time playing together,
the 12 adults enjoyed conversation, beverages and corn hole.
The favorite dessert of the night was the kit kat bars I made.
So I'm going to share the recipe with you here...
they don't really taste just like kit kat bars but they're super yummy!

Sorry about the dark picture...took this late last night right before I devoured it.Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 15 minutes
Yield: 36-48 kit kat bars

  • 60 buttery crackers, such as Keebler Club Crackers
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup firmly-packed brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1-1/2 cups crushed graham crackers
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  1. Butter a 9 x 13 baking dish. Line with a layer of 20 crackers.

  2. In a small saucepan, bring butter, sugars and milk together to a boil over medium heat. Stir in crushed graham crackers. Let boil 5 minutes.

  3. Pour half of the sugar mixture over the crackers. Cover with another layer of 20 crackers, pressing down lightly. Pour remaining syrup mixture over crackers, smoothing to coat.

  4. Top with the remaining crackers, pressing lightly.

  5. Place chocolate chips and peanut butter in a microwave-safe dish. Heat on high 30 seconds. Stir and repeat until chips are melted. (Alternatively, melt chocolate chips and peanut butter in a saucepan over low heat.)

  6. Pour evenly over the top layer of crackers, making sure the crackers are completely covered.

  7. Refrigerate until kit kat bars are firm.

I also added 1/2 cup of butterscotch chips to the topping.
These bars are yummy and will be the hit of your next party! So, if I'm scarce around here for the next month or so
please understand that I am trying to get everything ready
to relocate our little family of five and get a house ready to sell,
and pack and reduce and pack...

Gimme a break, gimme a break,
break me off a piece of that
kit kat bar!

  1. Mmmm! Yummy! I have been on sweet OVERLOAD this past week and you just put the cherry on top! *smile* O, Happy Belated Birthday to ya hubby! Enjoy the rest of your Saturday!

  2. I used to make these way back in the day when Keebler crackers came as a sheet of 4 and you laid the sheet of crackers down in the pan first then poured the mixture over the crackers. They were much easier to make then! They are wonderful delish to be sure! I'll have to try it again just crushing the crackers (I tried it once with laying out the little individual crackers out but the liquid mix made them float and they certainly weren't very pretty!

  3. Where will you be in Tennessee? We're only an hour from Chattanooga. And, by the way, that recipe is ridiculously amazing! :)

  4. my mom made these for a party and commented on how much everyone loved them. I lost the recipe so thanks for sharing with us! (dont we all enjoy easy and yummy?!)

  5. Yummy stuff, thanks for sharing!! Good luck on the move to TN, being a military wife I understand all about moving. I would like to extend an invitation to link up your Trendy Treehouse Store to The Homespun Slate @ The Tattered Tag. I would love to feature you one week. :)

  9. Yummo! I'm sure I can smell their yummy scent from here!

Best of luck with your move! I hope it all goes really well :)
